Dr. Adam Hand presents New Technologies for Sustainable Asphalt Pavements. Dr. Hand is a Professor at the University of Nevada Reno and registered Professional Engineer. Prior to joining the UNR Reno faculty in 2016, he worked for Granite Construction Inc. for 16 years in various roles with the last six years as Vice President of Quality Management. He has published over 175 papers and technical reports and delivered over 200 invited presentations. He is a past President of AAPT that actively serves the industry via technical committees, advisory panels, and board of director appointments.

LaToya Johnson, PE is the team leader for the Pavement Design and Performance Team in the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Office of Infrastructure. LaToya manages a team of technical experts that set Agency priorities, develop and implement policy, and assist in the deployment of related tools and products in the areas of pavement design, preservation, performance management, sustainability, resilience, and materials quality assurance. Previously, she held positions with FHWA with the HQ Major Projects Team and in the New York and Georgia FHWA Division offices as a Transportation Engineer. She holds Bachelor’s degrees in physics from Spelman College and civil engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She obtained a Master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Maryland-College Park

Michael Huner, PE is an Engineering Consultant in the field of asphalt technology. He has worked for over 28 years in various aspects of the asphalt industry, ranging from research & testing to field engineering to technical services. Along with his consulting business, Mike is currently serving as the Project Manager for FHWA’s Mobile Asphalt Technology Center (MATC).

Dr. John Harvey, PE is a Distinguished Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Davis, and Director of the UC Pavement Research Center, the FHWA Sustainable Pavement Program Cooperative Center, and the City and County Pavement Improvement Center. He is principal investigator for research, development, and implementation projects working to improve cost-efficiency, environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and equal access to good pavement considering planning, pavement materials, design, and asset management for California and federal agencies, and industry, and training for local governments in California.

Greg Renegar joined Astec Inustries in 1983 and received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1985. Since joining Astec, Greg has worked in North America, South and Central America, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Central Asia, and throughout Europe as a field engineer, project engineer, and speaker. Greg previously held positions as Chief Engineer, and VP of Engineering. Greg became president of Astec Inc. in 2019, and is currently the VP of Customer Success.

Marty McNamara, PE has over 28 years of experience in production quality control. He has spent 23 years with Granite Construction Inc and currently serves as the Director of Materials Quality. In this role, Marty is tasked with implementing Granite’s materials quality program companywide to ensure quality operational practices are in place and performance goals are achieved in the construction materials segment. Marty earned Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degree in Civil Engineering from the Technical University of Nova Scotia and his M.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno.

Dr. Elie Hajj is a Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at University of Nevada. He has over 21 years of experience in academia and industry with an emphasis on sustainability of pavement systems. Dr. Hajj is currently a member of the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists, International Society for Asphalt Pavements, and multiple Transportation Research Board national Committees.

Dr. Yogesh Kumbargeri is Lead Research Engineer at Western Research Institute (WRI) in Laramie, WY. His expertise includes advanced pavement material characterization of asphalt binders and mixtures. At WRI, his activities are currently focused on developing newer sustainable asphalt products and specifications as well as characterization and evaluation of existing asphalt materials with paving and roofing applications.

Benjamin Cox is a Senior Research Engineer at the U.S. Army Engineer Research & Development Center (ERDC). He is ERDC’s asphalt materials laboratory and airfield asphalt research program and has worked on airfield paving projects all around the world. He has 13 years of experience in asphalt pavement materials and construction research.

Dr. Juliana Byzyka is an Assistant Research Engineer at the Transportation Research Center (TRC) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). She has 10+ years of experience in teaching, research, and the civil engineering industry. Since 2015 she has been working toward the development of an automated asphalt repair method. This contribution to the asphalt industry market is of significant economic value and laid the groundwork for the design of more resilient and safer roadways. Since 2023, she has expanded her research portfolio to surface transportation and in collaboration with TRC she conducts research on transportation operations, transportation safety, shared mobility, equitable mobility, emerging technologies in transportation, and sustainable transportation.

Mario Gomez P.E., is the Deputy Director for Operations and Maintenance for the Nevada Department of Transportation. Mario’s career at NDOT has spanned 24 years, with previous positions including District 1 Engineer in southern Nevada. Mario is a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. Notably, he’s also earned the distinction of being a state-certified public manager.

Sajan Abraham, PE is the Materials Testing Lab Manager for the City of Henderson Public Works Department. He also oversees and manages the City’s Residential Pavement Preservation Program. Prior to these roles, he was employed with various engineering companies as the Quality Control/Laboratory Manager for the previous 20 years and also tested and inspected asphalt, concrete, soils and aggregate. Mr. Abraham was involved in the development and implementation of the City of Henderson’s pavement maintenance program and its specifications.

Mo Rahman has 29 years of experience in asphalt materials industry since his undergraduate degree in 1995. He has specialized in construction materials, production / operations, evaluation / testing, quality control / quality assurance and managing QC lab. He is knowledgeable in liquid asphalt materials, engineering design and planning. He currently works as a Technical Marketing Manager for Ergon Asphalt & Emulsions.

Chris Rob is an area representative for Maxwell Products, a leading manufacturer of hot pour crack seal and mastics. He has been with the company for the past 6 years. Chris is dedicated to helping clients understand the benefits of using Maxwell Products and takes great pride in seeing the positive impact it has on their operations.

Scott Dmytrow has been involved in the asphalt industry since he was born; his family owned and operated hot mix plants and quarries in Pennsylvania. After a stint in the nuclear powered navy in the late 80’s, Scott rejoined the industry in 1991. Since that time, he has worked for both small and large companies across the US. Scott represented the preservation and emulsion industry at Caltrans meetings as the Rock Products/PMPC Representative and Chair from 2007-2023. He is a current board member for the Asphalt Emulsion Manufacturer’s Association (AEMA) and is active on the National Emulsion Task Force (ETF) group working on the development of AASHTO specifications for pavement preservation and owner of Pavement ACES.
