Continuing Education Credits: 1 PHD credit, 1 CM credit
Organization: University of Minnesota, Center for Transportation Studies

Sidewalks are some of our most familiar public spaces, but they serve a surprisingly complex range of uses and users. From walking and rolling to dining, gathering, commerce, and other activities, these shared spaces can also be the site of competing needs and priorities.

In this webinar, Michael Pollack, author of “Sidewalk Nation,” will explore the many roles sidewalks play in our communities, the conflicts that can arise over their use, and the legal and regulatory systems that shape how they are managed. He will also discuss how cities, towns, and residents might rethink their approach to these important public spaces.

Lillian Prybil, associate transportation planner with the City of Minneapolis, will offer a local perspective, reflecting on these issues through her work with parklets, street cafes, walking and rolling, and other public realm initiatives in Minneapolis.
