This free 4-hour online course introduces the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) design requirements and guidelines for public rights-of-way. The course also discusses design challenges and options, based on engineering design guidelines, for engineers and designers. The course runs from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. PT with a 2-hour break in between.

Familiarity with the U.S. Access Board’s draft Proposed Guidelines for Pedestrian Facilities in the Public Right-of-Way is recommended, but not required, prior to attending this course. Participants may send examples of design challenges to meeting standards and guidelines for accessible design. Please send maps, photos, and or descriptions to brooke.struve@dot.gov 2 weeks before the start of class.

This course is intended for transportation agency staff who design, construct, or inspect public rights-of-way for ADA compliance. Job titles may include:

  • Engineers.
  • Designers.
  • Construction Inspectors.
  • Engineering Consultants.
  • Public Works Directors.
