Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) methods will be discussed for assessing the condition and geometry/makeup of various types of underground structures. Included will be assessment of concrete tunnel liners as well as concrete and steel pipelines and conduits. NDE methods can be used to look for voids behind conduits (such as dam outflow tunnels and grouted water pipes) and can also be used to measure current concrete thickness, rebar details, joint integrity, and to map out areas of delamination, erosion, or other degradation for both forensic as well as quality assurance purposes. The NDE methods to be discussed include radar, impact echo, surface waves, and slab impulse response.
