This 2-day workshop (8-11 am both days) introduces the different techniques for maintaining and rehabilitating both asphalt and concrete-surfaced airfield pavements. The workshop concludes with a discussion of ways to improve an airport’s pavement program.

This workshop is intended for anyone involved in airfield pavement maintenance. It begins with an introduction to the different types of pavements and materials, including an explanation of how they’re put together and the factors that affect how they perform. That introduction is followed by an overview of how to evaluate pavements by considering different measures of pavement condition. New content on some of the innovative sensor-based technologies being used for pavement evaluation highlight where pavement evaluation is heading. These introductory sessions lay the groundwork for presentations on the different techniques for maintaining and rehabilitating both asphalt and concrete-surfaced airfield pavements. The workshop concludes with a discussion of ways to improve an airport’s pavement program.

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to do the following:

  • Describe the different types of pavements and explain their typical performance.
  • Identify the different types and causes of distresses associated with flexible and rigid pavements.
  • List various techniques included in a comprehensive pavement evaluation.
  • Identify appropriate treatments for flexible and rigid pavements under a range of conditions.

Airfield Pavement Maintenance and Repair is an elective course of the Road Scholar Program.
