This webinar is part of a FHWA Office of Operations project to present information on active interchange management (AIM). AIM encompasses a variety of operational strategies to improve traffic flow and safety at freeway interchanges. AIM is a modern approach to traffic management that focuses on optimizing the flow of vehicles at interchange merge and diverge areas and ramp terminals, where congestion and safety issues often originate. The webinar will describe AIM, the strategies that are included, and potential benefits. It will also discuss the situations under which AIM may be applicable and some example locations where AIM has been implemented. It will also present a methodology that can be used to determine which AIM strategies may be useful for subject interchange areas. Finally, potential challenges in implementing AIM strategies will be discussed.
