SUMMARY:Road Safety Champion Program Core Module #6: Reading the Roadway
DESCRIPTION:This two-hour training will teach participants how to “read the road” as well as the importance of doing so in daily activities. It will use real world examples on different roadway components to demonstrate how participants may be able to uncover potential safety issues during their routine activities. It will also discuss how the road safety audit process can be used to “read the road” in a more formal approach. The training will also discuss the consequences daily activities of workers may have on safety. \nThe National Center for Rural Road Safety will host all seven core modules of the RSCP on Tuesdays starting March 14th and running until April 25th. \nNOTE: \n\nThese trainings will use Zoom. Please ensure Zoom is on your “safe” email list before registering to ensure you receive the link to attend.\nThese trainings are part of the RSCP\, so the recording WILL NOT be made available to registrants. Please only register if you can attend that day.\nYou do not need to attend all 7 modules and can take them out of order.\nYou must attend the entire training to receive a certificate of completion.

SUMMARY:Road Safety Champion Program Core Module #7: Safety Analysis Process
DESCRIPTION:The safety analysis process\, as part of the FHWA Safety Toolkit\, is a systematic process for identifying the factors that can contribute to crashes and implementing effective countermeasures. It is a best practice method that is flexible and can be used to fit your needs. This two-hour training will cover the safety analysis process and discuss how it can be applied using two different complementary analysis methods: the traditional site analysis and the systemic analysis. Additionally\, case studies will be utilized to demonstrate practical applications on the process. \nThe National Center for Rural Road Safety will host all seven core modules of the RSCP on Tuesdays starting March 14th and running until April 25th. \nInformation on each of these two-hour trainings is provided below (listed by date). \nNOTE: \n\nThese trainings will use Zoom. SUMMARY:FHWA Innovation Exchange Webinar Addressing Nighttime Visibility for Safety
DESCRIPTION:Nighttime adds another dimension to intersection\, roadway departure\, and vulnerable road user safety. The nighttime fatality rate on the Nation’s roadways is three times higher than the daytime rate. Urban areas usually have streetlights near schools\, parks\, transit stops\, sports complexes\, and the like to help illuminate pedestrians\, but what are other effective safety countermeasures\, including for rural areas? Streetlights\, although highly effective\, can come at a price. \nFHWA will host an Innovation Exchange Webinar with subject matter experts to discuss options for increasing nighttime safety. The discussion will include experts from FHWA\, local agencies\, and the National Park Service\, to provide a perspective of nighttime safety in intentionally dark areas. \nIf you have questions about this upcoming webinar\, please contact Karyn Vandervoort with FHWA’s Office of Federal Lands Highway at karyn.vandervoort@dot.gov. \nNo registration required. \nTo join the webinar: \nJoin ZoomGov Meeting \nMeeting ID:  161 162 7430\nPasscode:  889904

SUMMARY:Designing and Operating Roads for the Aging Population
DESCRIPTION:Designing and Operating Roads for the Aging Population – Webinar Series \nThis webinar meets 2 times. \nMay\nWed\, May 24\, 2023 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM EDT (Part 1)\nWed\, May 24\, 2023 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM EDT (Part 2) \nThis 2-part webinar series provides an overview of recommendations for designing and operating roads to better meet the aging population’s needs. Keeping our roads safe for older users is an emphasis area for many transportation agencies. There are over 40 million licensed drivers in the United States aged 65 or older – a 33% increase from 10 years ago. Older drivers represent about 18% of all licensed drivers nationwide\, with even higher concentrations in some states. Aging can impact a variety of skills and abilities necessary for safe driving. This workshop will familiarize participants with the physical\, perceptual\, and cognitive impairments that can impact the ability to safely navigate a vehicle\, and illustrate key strategies that agencies can implement for improving safety and mobility for older roadway users. It is intended for transportation professionals involved in designing\, constructing\, operating and maintaining streets and roads. The workshop content is directly derived from FHWA’s Handbook for Designing Roadways for the Aging Population and will familiarize participants with the recommended practices from the Handbook in the areas of highway geometry\, operations\, and traffic control devices. Instructor – Mark Doctor\, P.E.\, Safety and Design Engineer\, Federal Highway Administration Office of Technical Services / Resource Center (Atlanta\, GA). \nTo access a PDF flyer\, click here.

SUMMARY:Managing Local Roads Effectively: Module 1 of 3 – Introduction to Transportation Asset Management
DESCRIPTION:The first module describes the principles and components of a transportation asset management (TAM) program. The module includes a discussion of the challenges local transportation agencies face and the solutions a TAM program provides\, per component. Examples of local transportation agencies are included to highlight the real benefits derived from implementing TAM. \nThe material also introduces tools to communicate funding needs and the strategies an agency is using to care for its road and street network. Nevada DOT’s Transportation Asset Management Plan (TAMP) is one example\, which explains how TAM strategies are developed and how they are being applied. Other examples from local agencies illustrate how a TAMP can benefit a smaller agency. \nLearn more about this 3-part series here.

SUMMARY:INSPIRE University Transportation Center Webinar: Accurate and Efficient Updating of Bridge Risk Assessments Based on Inspection Data
DESCRIPTION:INSPIRE University Transportation Center Presents \nACCURATE AND EFFICIENT UPDATING OF BRIDGE RISK ASSESSMENTS BASED ON INSPECTION DATA\nPresent:  June 13\, 2023\, 12:00 PM Central Time (US and Canada)Speaker: Dr. Iris Tien\, Georgia Institute of Technology \nA FREE WEBINAR \nAs structural inspection data is increasing\, it is important to be able to translate this information into accurate and efficient updating of bridge risk assessments to support risk-based decision-making. Analytical fragility functions provide a way to quantify the risk of a structure. One method to construct seismic fragility curves is to perform a series of nonlinear dynamic analyses of the structure. However\, the high computational cost in running and re-running analyses over the full finite-element model can be prohibitive to effectively update bridge risk assessments. This talk will describe new methodologies to efficiently and accurately update analytical fragility curves. The reduction in computational cost from both reducing the number of analyses required and simplifying the structural complexity are investigated. The method is applied to update calculations of seismic bridge fragilities accounting for varying levels of measured corrosion. Results comparing updated fragility curves obtained from using the proposed approach versus using the full set of dynamic analyses show that the proposed method achieves accurate\, stable\, and more quickly converging fragility calculations. In addition to this work on the impacts of corrosion on bridge risk\, further work on integrating scour inspection data into updated assessments of bridge risk will also be discussed. \n~REGISTER HERE~  \n
