SUMMARY:Kentucky Transportation Center webinar: Chainsaw Safety
DESCRIPTION:Chainsaws are widely used throughout the world. They’re used in wide variety of industries such as commercial\, residential\, arborist\, road maintenance\, property maintenance\, ground operations\, and bucket truck operations. Chainsaws can be very useful\, but it important to remember they can also be very dangerous. Every year\, numerous chainsaw operators and bystanders are seriously injured and killed due to chainsaw accidents. A large majority of these statistics could have been prevented by learning and practicing proper chainsaw safety. During this presentation\, we will discuss chainsaw maintenance procedures\, how to select and properly use personal protective equipment\, and how to safely operate the chainsaw to reduce the risk of injury.

SUMMARY:Ohio DOT Research Section webinar: Determining Bond Strength of Micro-Surfacing Mixes
DESCRIPTION:Micro-surfacing has been widely used by several transportation agencies including the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) as a preventive maintenance treatment in order to extend the service life of a pavement structure. The current ODOT specifications require placing a tack coat on an existing pavement surface prior to the application of a micro-surfacing mix in order to improve the bond strength along the interface between the two materials. Some industry professionals argue that tack coat is not necessary in micro-surfacing applications. However\, the risk of not using a tack coat may include premature failure due to poor bonding between the micro-surfacing mix and the pre-existing pavement surface. Therefore\, this unique research was initiated to evaluate the bond strength between micro-surfacing mixes and existing pavement surfaces with and without the application of tack coat in order to determine if tack coat is needed in micro-surfacing applications.  This presentation will provide information on the comprehensive field and laboratory testing programs that occurred and highlight the findings and recommendations.

SUMMARY:Asphalt Pavement Alliance webinar: Designing a Perpetual Pavement
DESCRIPTION:Pavement engineers have been producing long-lasting asphalt pavements since the 1930s. Research has shown that well-constructed and adequately designed flexible pavements can perform well for extended periods of time. Many of these pavements were the products of full-depth or deep strength asphalt pavement designs\, and both design philosophies have been shown to provide adequate strength over extended life cycles. This is possible because both types of design rely on the construction of a sound base as a working platform and to spread traffic loads in addition to a thick asphalt structure designed to reduce the tensile strains at the bottom of the asphalt as well as the compressive strains at the top of the subgrade. This webinar will discuss material selection and mixture design to optimize Perpetual Pavement performance\, discuss current Perpetual design practices\, and present best practices for construction of high quality\, high performance pavements. \nBy the end of this presentation attendees will be able to: \n1. List the chief advantages of Perpetual Pavements\n2. Describe the functions of the various material layers in Perpetual Pavements\n3. Discuss the principle design features of Perpetual Pavements

SUMMARY:Asphalt Pavement Alliance webinar: Asphalt Paving in Private Market Applications –Porous Pavement in Commercial Asphalt Pavements
DESCRIPTION:Porous asphalt pavements are being used by many owners to construct asphalt pavements that become part of the stormwater solution\, reducing runoff\, improving infiltration\, and saving land. The performance of these pavements depends on proper design\, materials\, construction methods\, and quality control. In this session you will get an understanding of porous pavement design and understand the details of proper construction practices\, material selection and handling\, and how to protect porous pavements. \nTop Three Takeaways for attendees: \n\nYou will understand how to properly mix\, handle\, and install porous asphalt\nYou will understand the differences in behavior between conventional asphalt and porous asphalt and why\nYou will take away a few rules of thumb\, helpful tips\, and how typical pitfalls can be avoided\n\nProfessional engineers (PEs) who register and attend the entire webinar as an individual will be awarded 1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDHs). APA/NAPA’s webinar program awards PDH credits only to the registered individual\, and not to other members of a group that view the webinar together. To be eligible for the credits\, individuals must remain signed in for the entire webinar\, including for any question and answer session following the presentations. \nCan’t make it to the live webinar? Sign up anyway to receive the recording.
