SUMMARY:Ohio DOT’s Research Section webinar: Analysis of Aramid Synthetic Fibers in Asphalt Mixes on Local Roads
DESCRIPTION:Different technologies have been developed and used to enhance the resistance of asphalt mixes to different types of distresses in new flexible pavements and overlays. One of these technologies is the use of aramid fibers. The aramid fibers are heat-resistant fibers that have a much higher tensile strength than the other two types of fibers allowed in Ohio.  Despite the potential benefits for the use of aramid fibers in asphalt mixes\, limited information is available on the field performance of aramid fiber-reinforced asphalt mixes as overlays on local roads (i.e.\, road maintained by cities\, counties and townships). \nThe main goal of this research was to evaluate the rutting and cracking resistance of non-polymer-modified aramid fiber-reinforced asphalt mixes used for resurfacing applications on local roads and compare it to that of polymer-modified asphalt mixes. Another objective of this study was to compare the performance of non-polymer-modified fiber-reinforced asphalt mixes without the use of SAMI to non-fiber-reinforced mixes (both polymer-modified and non-polymer-modified) with the use of SAMI to control reflection cracking.  The research was divided into two phases.  Phase 1 focused on laboratory testing of asphalt mixes with aramid fibers while Phase 2 included the construction and initial baseline analysis of test sections in two cities and one county in Ohio.

DESCRIPTION:A key to building a successful asphalt paving project is to utilize a quality bid package. Vague bid packages result in higher prices\, job site conflicts and the possibility of unmet owner’s expectations. This webinar enables attendees to produce bid packages that ensure best pricing and a project delivered on time\, on budget and as planned. \nAttendee’s key takeaways: \n1) Understand the importance of advertisement\, award and contract execution.\n2) How to develop key provisions to protect the owner and insure bidding by qualified contractors.\n3) Best practices to develop a detailed bid item list. \nProfessional engineers (PEs) who register and attend the entire webinar as an individual will be awarded 1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDHs). APA/NAPA’s webinar program awards PDH credits only to the registered individual\, and not to other members of a group that view the webinar together. To be eligible for the credits\, individuals must remain signed in for the entire webinar\, including for any question and answer session following the presentations. \nAPA/NAPA will report credits earned to the Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP). Complaints about registered providers may be sent to RCEP\, 1015 15th Street\, NW\, 8th Floor\, Washington\, D.C.\, 20005. \nCan’t make it to the live webinar? Sign up anyway to recieve the recording.
