SUMMARY:Kentucky Transportation Center webinar: The Carrot or the Stick? Employee Engagement
DESCRIPTION:More now than ever\, agencies that maintain highways\, roads\, and streets are counted on to provide fast\, high quality service because good maintenance saves lives and money. Meanwhile\, the roadway system is growing in size and complexity\, and government agencies are under ever-greater scrutiny by the public to perform at their very best. While maintenance needs increase\, the workers\, equipment\, and funds remain in short supply. Shortages or not\, it is vital that workers do good work. The best and quickest way to encourage this is through effective motivation and engagement by their immediate supervisors. This webinar looks at what makes agencies successful\, how to define worker needs and wants\, and how to take advantage of those for increased productivity and employee engagement. Is it the Carrot or the Stick? Join us and find out!

SUMMARY:CalAPA training: Understanding the Job Mix Formula
DESCRIPTION:Any successful asphalt pavement project begins with the Job Mix Formula\, a detailed recipe for making Hot Mix Asphalt to exacting standards to meet project specifications and the pavement design expectations of the project owner. With that in mind\, CalAPA is pleased to offer a 2.5 hour seminar on the most important information you need to know about a Job Mix Formula. This class will be led by veteran materials expert Greg Reader\, with G3 Quality\, who has worked closely with Caltrans and local agencies for many years on various aspects of creating a successful Job Mix Formula. This course provides an overview of the mix design procedure\, testing protocol\, material components\, and the typical reporting requirements used to develop a JMF. The course will also include typical challenges and troubleshooting strategies designers often encounter during the JMF development.

SUMMARY:CalAPA training: Asphalt Forensics
DESCRIPTION:When pavements fail\, it is important to understand why so that the proper remedy can be applied. This course covers the myriad of problems that can contribute to pavement failures\, and a step-by-step approach (forensic engineering) to determining the cause and developing a solution. The course is taught by a nationally noted expert in the area of pavement forensics\, Tim Murphy\, who has conducted similar sessions around the United States. \nKey takeaways of this class include: \n\nUnderstanding the principles of asphalt pavement forensics.\nUnderstanding the challenges inherent in asphalt pavement design and construction\, and recommendations on how to overcome those challenges.\nFocusing on sub-grade\, sub-base\, pavement cross-section specifications\, and asphalt production and construction techniques that are needed for successful asphalt pavement performance.\nCovers roadways\, airfields\, and commercial/industrial pavements.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Construction Site Stormwater Management web conference
DESCRIPTION:Note: this course is now free. \nThis introductory\, 4-hour course (June 29–30\, 1–3:30 pm PT both days) on construction stormwater pollution control addresses the following topics: \n\nBackground of construction stormwater pollution control regulations.\nConstruction site stormwater inspections procedures.\nInstallation techniques of pollution control measures.\nProper maintenance of sediment and erosion control measures.\n\nThe course also provides an overview of a stormwater pollution prevention plan and its essential elements. The course is intended for personnel who are responsible for implementing stormwater control measures on construction sites. Stormwater Pollution Control can also help participants achieve the “qualified person or qualified personnel” designation required by the stormwater construction general permit to perform construction site stormwater inspections. \nStormwater Pollution Control is an elective course in the Road Scholar Program. \nClick here for further information. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Ohio DOT’s Research Section webinar: Analysis of Aramid Synthetic Fibers in Asphalt Mixes on Local Roads
DESCRIPTION:Different technologies have been developed and used to enhance the resistance of asphalt mixes to different types of distresses in new flexible pavements and overlays. One of these technologies is the use of aramid fibers. The aramid fibers are heat-resistant fibers that have a much higher tensile strength than the other two types of fibers allowed in Ohio.  Despite the potential benefits for the use of aramid fibers in asphalt mixes\, limited information is available on the field performance of aramid fiber-reinforced asphalt mixes as overlays on local roads (i.e.\, road maintained by cities\, counties and townships). \nThe main goal of this research was to evaluate the rutting and cracking resistance of non-polymer-modified aramid fiber-reinforced asphalt mixes used for resurfacing applications on local roads and compare it to that of polymer-modified asphalt mixes. Another objective of this study was to compare the performance of non-polymer-modified fiber-reinforced asphalt mixes without the use of SAMI to non-fiber-reinforced mixes (both polymer-modified and non-polymer-modified) with the use of SAMI to control reflection cracking.  The research was divided into two phases.  Phase 1 focused on laboratory testing of asphalt mixes with aramid fibers while Phase 2 included the construction and initial baseline analysis of test sections in two cities and one county in Ohio.

SUMMARY:Barrier Basics
DESCRIPTION:This 2.5-hour workshop explores the basics of longitudinal roadside barriers. Together we will discuss why and when barriers are needed on the roadway\, review the types and characteristics of barriers\, and find out where to locate guidance for placing and installing barriers. Finally\, we will review maintenance requirements for roadside barriers and discover the important role maintenance plays in keeping the barriers performing as they should. \nYou’ll have a chance to use resources\, such as the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide as well as Nevada-specific design guides and specifications\, to answer questions and make decisions about real-world scenarios you might encounter when placing barriers
