SUMMARY:NVLTAP: Road Safety 365 (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Reducing the number and severity of crashes on local and rural roadways is a number one priority for most agencies. The FHWA Office of Safety developed “Road Safety 365” to provide local and rural agencies with practical and effective ways to incorporate safety solutions into daily activities and the project development process. \nThis free two-day course\, delivered virtually February 28–March 1 (8:30-11:00 a.m. PT)\, explores how construction\, maintenance\, and other activities can impact roadway safety and provides practical guidance for improving road safety that is specifically geared to local road projects and day-to-day activities. \nAfter attending training\, you will be able to: \n\nIdentify safety issues unique to local agencies.\nDescribe ways to incorporate and implement practical safety solutions during projects and maintenance.\nIdentify common challenges to improving road safety and list existing resources to address them.\nDescribe practical and low-cost countermeasures to improve safety.\nIdentify methods to inform decision makers about practical ways to improve safety on local roads.\nExplain some of the potential components of a “safety culture” and describe what it means to have a “safety attitude.”\nDemonstrate how to “read the road.”\nDescribe the role of the Strategic Highway Safety Plan and the importance of a Local Road Safety Plan.\n\nThis program is designed for all public works directors\, road and highway supervisors and foremen\, transportation engineers and other safety professionals. Participants will learn practical ways to “read the road” to improve safety and save lives! \n*Road Safety 365 is an elective course of the Road Scholar Program.

SUMMARY:NVLTAP Managing Local Roads Effectively: A 3-Part Series (Module 1/Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Overall Course Description \nLocal roadway agencies are expected to provide a safe\, comfortable traveling experience to the community. However\, the resources available to meet expectations are limited\, particularly for small and rural agencies. \nOver the last decade\, federal and state transportation agencies have adopted an approach for meeting similar challenges. This data-driven approach helps agencies get the most bang for their buck by picking projects and treatments that keep roads and streets in the best possible condition for as long as possible. The approach is called Transportation Asset Management (TAM). \nWhile TAM is a great fit for federal and state transportation agencies\, many local agencies are not ready to take on development of a TAM program. This training offers a simple overview of TAM’s components and illustrates how little changes can have a big impact on an agency. \nModule 1: Introduction to TAM \nThe first module describes the principles and components of a TAM program. The module includes a discussion of the challenges local transportation agencies face and the solutions a TAM program provides\, per component. Examples of local transportation agencies are included to highlight the real benefits derived from implementing TAM. \nAudience \nThe training is appropriate for local agencies of any size\, including small agencies with only a few paved roads to larger agencies with a more complex asset network.

DESCRIPTION:Webinar: A Guide for Estimating the Benefits of Closing Gaps in Active Transportation Networks\nDate: March 20\, 2026\nTime: 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm PT\nCost: Free \nContinuing Education Credits: Unknown\nOrganization: Transportation Research and Education Center (TREC)  \nExplore brand new research from NCHRP Research Report 1149 Estimating Benefits of Closing Gaps in Active Transportation Networks: A Guide. This NCHRP project produced a step-by-step guide for estimating the benefits of closing gaps in active transportation facilities. The guide was designed for use by practitioners and includes different approaches for different levels of resource availability and expertise. This seminar will cover the following topics: \n\nGaps in active transportation networks. What is a gap and who does it affect?\nBehavior change: How does transportation behavior change after an active transportation gap is closed?\nBenefits: What are the best practices for monetizing the health\, safety\, emissions\, and local economic benefits of active transportation projects?\nCommunication: What are effective approaches for communicating the benefits tailored to different audiences (i.e.\, decision makers\, practitioners\, community members\, etc.)?

The previous reauthorization — known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law\, or the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) — expires this year. So what does the future look like? More money for walking\, biking\, and transit? Accountability for how states spend their money? Or a continuation of the highway expansion projects spurred on by the IIJA? Join Beth Osborne\, CEO and President of Smart Growth America and former U.S. Department of Transportation official\, for a review of how we got here and what’s at stake for the future of federal policy.

SUMMARY:NVLTAP Managing Local Roads Effectively: A 3-Part Series (Module 2/Virtual)
\nModule 2: \nThe second module discusses the impact of small roadway management changes on performance in just a few years. Using a simple road network as an example\, the lesson demonstrates how to get the most bang for the buck from available funding. The material then introduces the types of data agencies have to drive decision-making and how it is used. The training includes simple and sophisticated data collection methods and analysis tools to emphasize that a TAM approach is customizable to the agency’s current business practices and resources. \nAudience \nThe training is appropriate for local agencies of any size\, including small agencies with only a few paved roads to larger agencies with a more complex asset network.

This lesson introduces the concept of risk and how to use risk to prioritize where the agency spends its money. It also explains how agencies can apply the principles discussed in the training to bridges\, drainage systems\, and other road and street assets. The training closes with a discussion about how competing priorities (such as safety\, social equity\, and mobility) can be considered in a TAM program. \nAudience \nThe training is appropriate for local agencies of any size\, including small agencies with only a few paved roads to larger agencies with a more complex asset network.
