SUMMARY:NAPA webinar: Recycled Asphalt Pavements (RAP) Part 3: The What\, Why\, and How of RAP
DESCRIPTION:Part 1: Recycled Asphalt Pavements (RAP) Part 1: The What\, Why\, and How of RAP\, Wednesday\, September 16 \nUtilization of RAP provides for favorable economic\, environmental and greenhouse gas emissions and societal impacts. In this webinar\, attendees will learn about historical RAP use\, recognize the need for and advantages of RAP use\, understand the types of RAP products and how they differ\, learn the leading practices for processing and stockpile management\, and understand RAP product variability compared to virgin aggregate and overall mix variability. \nPart 2: Recycled Asphalt Pavements (RAP) Part 2: Mix Design and Laboratory Performance Testing Wednesday\, October 7 \nAsphalt mixtures containing RAP\, when designed utilizing proper design principles and produced in consideration of production constraints have demonstrated excellent performance. This part of the webinar will focus on mix designs utilizing RAP\, the level of mix design analysis needed as RAP percentages increase\, the production variables to consider as RAP percentages increase and performance testing of asphalt mixes containing RAP. \nPart 3: Recycled Asphalt Pavements (RAP) Part 3: Field Performance and the User Experience\, Wednesday\, October 28 \nThis part of the webinar will highlight studies on field performance conducted by numerous state DOTs\, the Federal Highway Administration\, and various pavement research organizations including the National Center for Asphalt Technology. The segment will also highlight the experiences of two pavement engineer veterans who will provide long-term perspectives of using RAP in asphalt mixtures from the Illinois DOT and the Florida DOT. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Asphalt Pavement Alliance Webinar: Asphalt 101 for Civil and Geotechnical Engineers – Asphalt Production and Construction
DESCRIPTION:Civil and geotechnical engineers often specify asphalt for projects but don’t always get the opportunity to learn about production of the product. This webinar will take attendees behind the scenes using drone video to explore the asphalt production process leading up to delivery on-site. Furthering this educational opportunity\, engineers will learn about the construction process by watching asphalt placement and hearing tips to specify and design high-quality jobs presented by experienced asphalt experts.

SUMMARY:NAPA Webinar: Accelerated Asphalt Road Construction for Engineers and Owners
DESCRIPTION:Asphalt pavements are quick to construct\, but this traditional wisdom has rarely been quantified — until recently. Using a case study\, learn how researchers quantify speed of construction with user costs and local business impacts and learn also from a contractor on how asphalt’s speed of construction was a winning component to their bid. Agencies can gain a more holistic view of the total economic impact of a construction project. This analysis helps the agency make an informed decision surrounding the economic and construction costs associated with large pavement projects.

SUMMARY:Every Day Counts Virtual Summit
DESCRIPTION:EDC is a State–based model that identifies and rapidly deploys proven\, yet underutilized innovations to shorten the project delivery process\, enhance roadway safety\, reduce traffic congestion\, and integrate automation. The summit is an integral component of the EDC model\, bringing together transportation leaders and front-line professionals responsible for the development and delivery of highway projects. We are excited to conduct the EDC-6 summit virtually this year and welcome participation from all of our partners–State DOTs\, local agencies\, federal land management agencies\, tribes and industry–to encourage creative thinking\, and celebrate a shared vision for new opportunities. \nEDC is Innovation for a Nation on the Move.  In this cycle\, the seven initiatives feature strategies to increase engagement with people\, new applications of products to preserve and repair our infrastructure\, and improve processes to save time on project delivery and incident management.  We look forward to your participation in the summit.

SUMMARY:Kentucky LTAP: Chainsaw Safety Training
DESCRIPTION:Chainsaws are widely used in wide variety of industries and can be very useful\, but it is important to remember they can also be very dangerous. Every year\, numerous chainsaw operators and bystanders are seriously injured and killed due to chainsaw accidents. A large majority of these statistics could have been prevented by learning and practicing proper chainsaw safety. During this presentation\, we will discuss chainsaw maintenance procedures\, how to select and properly use personal protective equipment\, and how to safely operate the chainsaw to reduce the risk of injury.

SUMMARY:America Walks Webinar: Inclusive Planning in Tribal Communities - Engaging People with Disabilities in Designing Safe and Accessible Transportation Systems
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, December 9th\, America Walks will release a new White Paper on Inclusive Planning in Tribal Communities and broadcast a live webinar featuring the author and members of the Project Advisory Board. \nFunded through a Partnership for Inclusive Health Innovation Grant\, this project has involved research\, key informant interviews\, and expert analysis\, with the goals being: \n\nTo understand how people with disabilities are currently engaged in tribal community planning processes\, and\nTo develop recommendations for expanding inclusion and ensuring the design and construction of safe and accessible transportation systems.\n\nWhite Paper author Yamelith Aguilar will describe her research and key findings\, which relate to tribal culture\, existing infrastructure for walking and rolling\, and the legal applicability of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Following Yamelith’s presentation\, a panel of experts in disability inclusion\, community engagement/advocacy\, accessible design\, and tribal planning will discuss the implications of the study and recommendations for future projects and processes. These experts\, who represent national organizations and tribal governments\, served as the Project Advisory Board – reviewing drafts of the White Paper and providing additional context and best practices. \nFinally\, details of a new Tribal Inclusion Mini-Grants Program will be announced. Groups and communities with an interest or experience in this area of community change will be invited to submit brief proposals for projects designed to implement one or more recommendations of the White Paper. Two $2\,500 mini-grants will be awarded in January.

SUMMARY:National Institute for Transportation and Communities Webinar: Land Use and Transportation Policies for a Sustainable Future
DESCRIPTION:Liming Wang of PSU presents on AV technology’s impacts on travel\, land use and sustainability. \nEven though there are tremendous uncertainties in the timing and evolution path of the Autonomous Vehicles (AV) technology\, it may become a likely reality within most MPOs’ long-range regional transportation plan horizon of twenty years. Yet a recent survey of the largest MPOs in the US indicates only one of them “even mentions driverless\, automated\, or autonomous vehicles in its most recent RTP”. One of the uncertainties in assessing the impacts of AV is their direction: on one hand\, self-driving cars could increase VMT by increasing roadway capacity\, lowering costs of travel; on the other\, they may reduce VMT by enabling more car-sharing\, improving access to transit\, eliminating the fixed costs of car ownership\, and reclaiming parking space. To date\, there is no suitable conceptual framework or modeling tools available to MPOs for quantitatively assessing the likely long-term effects of AV or potential policy scenarios. \nThis project studies the possible impacts on travel and land use of the emerging AV technology and focuses on advancing this innovative mobility option by making sure it serves the greater good of building sustainable and equitable communities in its adoption. It also contributes to smart cities research by examining the likely social\, economic\, and environmental outcomes of integrating AV in our cities and by starting to consider policies and plans to preempt their potential adverse impacts and to ensure that the AV technology improves access for all people.
