SUMMARY:FHWA webinar: Have You Considered the Humble Rumble?
DESCRIPTION:Have You Considered the Humble Rumble? \nRural roadway departures make up a third of U.S. traffic fatalities—about 30 people a day. The Every Day Counts round five (EDC-5) initiative\, Focus on Reducing Rural Roadway Departures (FoRRRwD)\, features four pillars: Addressing All Public Roads\, Systemic Approach\, Safety Action Plans\, and Proven Countermeasures. Rumble strips are a low-cost safety countermeasure that can reduce single-vehicle run-off-road and cross-center line crashes. Rumble strips\, whether center line\, edge line\, or shoulder\, alert inattentive or drowsy motorists whose vehicles have drifted out of their travel lane. \nTarget Audience: State\, local\, and tribal agencies – come and learn how several agencies have used the four pillars of FoRRRwD to implement this countermeasure to keep vehicles in their lanes\, and how you can do the same. \nPresenters and Topics: \n\nLogan Beise\, North Dakota DOT and Jason Benson\, Cass County\, ND\, will discuss North Dakota DOT’s implementation of rumbles and present a county perspective of the same.\nDavid Swenka and Katrina Kloberdanz\, Colorado DOT will provide an overview of the Colorado experience with rumbles.\nMaria Silver\, Macomb County\, Michigan will talk about her County’s centerline “mumble” strip installation project.\n\nRegistration: Participants must register in advance at https://connectdot.connectsolutions.com/expiz70ocda5/event/registration.html Space is limited. \nThis webinar is free and open to anyone who is interested. Please share this email with all who might be interested. \nThe Federal Highway Administration is committed to providing equal access to this event for all participants. If you need alternative formats or services because of a disability\, please contact Jennifer Symoun at jennifer.symoun@toxcel.com with your request by close of business May 14\, 2021.

SUMMARY:National Asphalt Pavement Association webinar: Asphalt Paving in Private Market Applications: Design of Commercial Asphalt Pavements
DESCRIPTION:Join NAPA for a unique presentation on asphalt parking lot pavements. Parking lot pavements have significant differences than traditional roadway pavements. Material types\, mix design technique\, and construction practices will be discussed to improve service life and reduce maintenance costs. Asphalt mix designs are extremely important for low volume\, parking lot mixtures. The importance of sufficient voids in mineral aggregates\, or VMA will be outlined with effective maneuvers\, both in the lab and field to achieve higher VMA. With larger area footprints\, unstable subgrades are common during construction of parking lot pavements. Therefore\, we will equip you with mitigation methods for dealing with poor subgrades\, combined with effective methods of in place density and appropriate compaction.

SUMMARY:Hot Mix Asphalt Acceptance Based on Percent Within Limits webinar
DESCRIPTION:Construction acceptance plans can reward or penalize contractors based upon the quality of their work. For asphalt pavement construction work\, the goal of the acceptance plan is to encourage contractors to focus on materials and construction factors that help achieve better performance and longer life. For hot-mix asphalt (HMA) paving\, there are three primary factors that affect performance: \n\nGradation of the aggregate.\nAsphalt binder content.\nCompacted density.\n\nIn 2016\, under the sponsorship of the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT)\, researchers at the University of Nevada Reno’s Western Regional Superpave Center developed a tool to use as an alternative to the conventional mix acceptance procedure in the state’s Standard. The new methodology applies a statistical-based\, percent within limits (PWL) approach to determine if the as-constructed mix properties fall within acceptable limits and if the contractor is eligible for a bonus or incurs a penalty. (Note that the assessment is made on a lot-by-lot basis). Read NDOT Research Report No. 206-10-803\, “Develop a PWL System for Dense Graded Hot Mix Asphalt Construction\, Including Pay Factors” (Jan 2015) to learn more about the tool. \nDuring this 2-hour webinar\, learn more about the tool and how it can be applied at your agency. \nThe participants who will benefit the most from the webinar include engineers involved with preparing pavement construction specifications\, overseeing pavement construction\, and determining final contractor payment. Participants will receive a digital version of the NDOT report and the mix acceptance tool. \nClick here for further information.
