SUMMARY:NHI 131139: Constructing and Inspecting Asphalt Paving Projects (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Nevada LTAP hosts this four-day virtual course (7:30–11 am PT)\, free to local agencies\, from February 22 to 25\, 2021. \nNational Highway Institute (NHI) 131139 introduces asphalt pavement construction best practices\, from the importance of understanding project administration roles and responsibilities to the most vital elements of laydown operations and compaction. Participants learn contract administration techniques\, recognize proper construction practices\, identify construction issues and their source\, determine the impact of construction issues on performance\, and select communication strategies for contractors\, consultants\, and superiors. They can then apply the knowledge and skills to maximize quality on construction projects. \nThe importance of a proactive approach to managing and inspecting construction projects is emphasized at every stage. This includes quickly addressing problems\, implementing corrective actions\, and documenting communications between the agency and contractor. \nThis course is eligible as a substitute for the NVLTAP Road Scholar elective course\, Asphalt Paving Technology & Maintenance. \nThis course is designed for participants who ensure a project is built to the owner’s specifications. Participants can be relatively new to asphalt or general project inspection. Participants with broader experience can also take the course to learn about innovative asphalt pavement construction technologies\, participate in class discussions\, and share successful practices. The primary audience are local agency inspectors involved in the preconstruction\, construction\, and review of asphalt paving projects. Multi-district or region attendance is encouraged to get a broader range of perspectives and ideas. \nClick here for further information. There are 10 seats remaining. The course is free\, but register soon because this course will fill up fast!

SUMMARY:Olson Engineering Webinar: Geophysical Methods for Assessment of Embankment Dams
DESCRIPTION:Embankment dams and levees can present problems where geophysics can help assess the current state of the structure. The most common failure mechanisms in these earthen structures are internal erosion\, overtopping\, and failure induced from a seismic event. Geophysical methods are most applicable to the internal erosion and seismic induced failures\, while related remote sensing technologies are more applicable to the overtopping issues. Internal erosion can occur when a flow path exists from one side of the dam to the other\, then as the head difference increases\, more material is removed leading to an increase in the diameter of the erosion path until the dam fails. Seismic induced failures are typically tied to earthquakes. In this presentation detection of voids and internal erosion pathways by spontaneous potential (SP)\, electromagnetic induction\, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT)\, and ground penetrating radar will be discussed. For assessment of seismic failure risks\, crosshole seismic\, downhole seismic\, and multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) will be discussed. For assessment of overtopping failure potential\, LiDAR\, photogrammetry\, and GPS will be briefly discussed as well as slope stability monitoring with interferometric phase radar.

With the influx of revenue\, decision makers asked themselves\, “How are we going to use that money and what can we realistically achieve?”  \nToday\, Kent County is on track to meet expectations. Join us as road commission representatives share their story and the strategies they have taken to accomplish this monumental achievement.  In addition the Michigan county’s successes\, participants of this webinar will walk away with free tools and resources on RoadResource.org that deliver on the same principles and concepts used by Kent County. Learn to put these tools to work for your own road network. \nAs 2021 continues with surprises and uncertainties in economic and infrastructure support\, it is more important than ever for road managers to understand real-life methods to improve road networks– whether budgets are increased or decreased for the year.

SUMMARY:Hot Mix Asphalt Acceptance Based on Percent Within Limits webinar
DESCRIPTION:Construction acceptance plans can reward or penalize contractors based upon the quality of their work. For asphalt pavement construction work\, the goal of the acceptance plan is to encourage contractors to focus on materials and construction factors that help achieve better performance and longer life. For hot-mix asphalt (HMA) paving\, there are three primary factors that affect performance: \n\nGradation of the aggregate.\nAsphalt binder content.\nCompacted density.\n\nIn 2016\, under the sponsorship of the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT)\, researchers at the University of Nevada Reno’s Western Regional Superpave Center developed a tool to use as an alternative to the conventional mix acceptance procedure in the state’s Standard. The new methodology applies a statistical-based\, percent within limits (PWL) approach to determine if the as-constructed mix properties fall within acceptable limits and if the contractor is eligible for a bonus or incurs a penalty. (Note that the assessment is made on a lot-by-lot basis). Read NDOT Research Report No. 206-10-803\, “Develop a PWL System for Dense Graded Hot Mix Asphalt Construction\, Including Pay Factors” (Jan 2015) to learn more about the tool. \nDuring this 2-hour webinar\, learn more about the tool and how it can be applied at your agency. \nThe participants who will benefit the most from the webinar include engineers involved with preparing pavement construction specifications\, overseeing pavement construction\, and determining final contractor payment. Participants will receive a digital version of the NDOT report and the mix acceptance tool. \nClick here for further information.

SUMMARY:National Asphalt Pavement Association webinar: Asphalt Paving in Private Market Applications: Design of Commercial Asphalt Pavements
DESCRIPTION:Join NAPA for a unique presentation on asphalt parking lot pavements. Parking lot pavements have significant differences than traditional roadway pavements. Material types\, mix design technique\, and construction practices will be discussed to improve service life and reduce maintenance costs. Asphalt mix designs are extremely important for low volume\, parking lot mixtures. The importance of sufficient voids in mineral aggregates\, or VMA will be outlined with effective maneuvers\, both in the lab and field to achieve higher VMA. With larger area footprints\, unstable subgrades are common during construction of parking lot pavements. Therefore\, we will equip you with mitigation methods for dealing with poor subgrades\, combined with effective methods of in place density and appropriate compaction.
