SUMMARY:Free Webinar: Assessing the Impacts of New Mobility on Cities
DESCRIPTION:This free webinar is organized by Portland State’s University’s Transportation Research and Education Center. \nAutonomous vehicles (AVs)\, e-commerce and the sharing economy are rapidly changing land use and transportation in cities. City leaders and professional planners are wondering how these technologies will change how they plan and operate cities. For the past year\, the University of Oregon’s Urbanism Next Center and Sustainable Year Program focused staff and students on helping the cities of Gresham and Eugene better understand the potential impacts of a wide-range of topics and  study a variety of potential responses to address the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities. These topics include issues related to safety\, social equity\, active transportation\, sustainability and environmental impacts\, design and management of the right-of-way\, and the metropolitan footprint. In addition\, the cities thought about city operations and budgeting and how they can inform decision-making\, manage innovation\, and consider the fiscal impacts and new mobility revenue. \nDuring this webinar\, the Urbanism Next researchers will discuss the research they conducted to help the cities navigate new mobility and emerging technologies. Researchers will discuss how cities are preparing for new mobility and autonomous vehicles in a way that supports goals around land use\, active transportation\, more equitable forms of travel\, and greenhouse gas emissions.

SUMMARY:Webinar: From Trail Maps to Trail Apps – Connecting with Visitors via Mobile Devices
DESCRIPTION:Most organizations actively communicate with their visitors through traditional channels such as newsletters\, websites\, and social media\, but most are missing out on increasing visitor engagement and safety where most visitors already are\, mobile devices! Modern\, agency driven mobile apps allow organizations to leverage this important new communication channel while also empowering trails users to safely enjoy their public lands by taking advantage of offline maps and wayfinding. \nThis webinar\, organized by American Trails\, will review the key components and benefits of a new mobile app platform\, OuterSpatial\, which is leading a cost-effective approach that gives stewards of our open spaces – including government agencies and nonprofits – control over what information is presented and how it’s presented and opening up an engagement channel with visitors. We’ll discuss the importance of this stewardship-first approach and how empowering the stewards of our land to publish quality content to visitors can create an experience that’s more welcoming to recreationalists. The session will feature Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation and their partners as they discuss their popular new Trails LA County mobile app\, including the benefits and challenges they’ve experienced. We’ll also review a number of state and local park and trail organizations actively leveraging a mobile app in California\, Oregon\, Alaska\, Massachusetts and other areas throughout the country. \nThe registration fee is $19 for members and $39 for non-members. For more information about this training\, click here.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Smart City Approaches to Traffic Signal Preemption & Priority: The Vendor Perspective
DESCRIPTION:This webinar\, hosted by the Institute of Transportation Engineers\, will highlight approaches to traffic signal preemption and priority that are emerging in the Smart City/Internet of Things (IoT) era. Implementation of centralized applications have been burdened in the past with low bandwidth communications common in older cities. Traditional traffic signal systems were built to limit the need for always on communication\, but the availability of lower cost cellular and other connectivity options present new opportunities for delivering improved service to first responders and transit agencies. In this webinar\, you will learn about several ways vendors are attacking the problem. A short presentation by each company will follow a facilitated Q&A session by the moderator Peter Koonce\, City of Portland. The cost is $99 for members and $149 for non-members.

SUMMARY:Free Webinar: Understanding How Women Travel
DESCRIPTION:The Eno Center for Transportation is hosting this free webinar. What are the needs and experiences of women traversing LA County? LA County Metro recently released a report\, “Understanding How Women Travel\,” in a first-of-its-kind effort to answer this question. Developing from Metro’s Women and Girls Governing Council\, this study aimed to collect data and offer findings that can help improve women’s safety and comfort on transit and attract and retain women to the Metro system. To ensure a comprehensive approach that captured the diverse needs and experiences of women in LA County\, the project team deployed an innovative\, mixed-methods approach to capture quantitative data as well as qualitative data from hard-to-reach rider populations including women experiencing homelessness\, women immigrants\, and women with disabilities. In this webinar\, panelists will discuss the origin of the project\, the methods used\, and the key findings from the study.

SUMMARY:Free training: NHI 131139: Constructing and Inspecting Asphalt Construction Projects
DESCRIPTION:This course is now filled and registration is closed. \nNevada LTAP is hosting this two-day class\, free to local agencies\, on February 11th 8 a.m.–4 p.m. through February 12th 8 a.m.–4 p.m at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno. \nNational Highway Institute (NHI) 131139 introduces asphalt pavement construction best practices\, from the importance of understanding project administration roles and responsibilities to the most vital elements of laydown operations and compaction. Participants learn contract administration techniques\, recognize proper construction practices\, identify construction issues and their source\, determine the impact of construction issues on performance\, and select communication strategies for contractors\, consultants\, and superiors. They can then apply the knowledge and skills to maximize quality on construction projects. \nThe importance of a proactive approach to managing and inspecting construction projects is emphasized at every stage. This includes quickly addressing problems\, implementing corrective actions\, and documenting communications between the agency and contractor. \nThis course is designed for participants who ensure a project is built to the owner’s specifications. Participants can be relatively new to asphalt or general project inspection. Participants with broader experience can also take the course to learn about innovative asphalt pavement construction technologies\, participate in class discussions\, and share successful practices. The primary audience comprises Federal\, State\, consultant\, and local agency inspectors and contractor personnel who are involved in the preconstruction\, construction\, and review of asphalt paving projects. Multi-district or region attendance is encouraged to get a broader range of perspectives and ideas. \nThis course is eligible as a substitute for the NVLTAP Road Scholar elective course\, Asphalt Paving Technology & Maintenance.

SUMMARY:Free FHWA Webinar: An Introduction to FHWA’s Quadrant Roadway Intersection Informational Guide
DESCRIPTION:Alternative intersections and interchanges offer the potential to improve safety and reduce delay at a lower cost and with fewer impacts than traditional solutions.  In 2014\, the Federal Highway Administration published informational guides for four innovative designs:  the Median U-Turn (MUT)\, Displaced Left Turn (DLT)\, Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT)\, and Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI).  Recently\, a fifth guide has been developed to provide information on the Quadrant Roadway Intersection (QRI). \nThe QRI concept uses a roadway in one intersection quadrant and three coordinated\, signalized intersections to eliminate direct left turns at the main juncture. This allows a reduction in signal phases to improve intersection safety\, capacity\, and efficiencies.  In addition to vehicular operational and safety improvements\, the QRI has many multimodal benefits\, including shorter and safer crossings for pedestrians and bicycles. \nFHWA is pleased to offer this webinar to all Federal\, State\, Municipal\, and Consultant transportation practitioners responsible for or interested in providing innovative solutions at intersections in need of operational\, safety\, and/or multimodal improvements. The webinar presentation will introduce the QRI Guide and review the information presented in the guide\, focusing on intersection operations\, safety\, various geometric forms\, and planning and design criteria to consider when evaluating the QRI as a potential intersection improvement alternative.  The presentation will also include information provided from several DOTs that have constructed a QRI in recent years.   Certificates of completion for professional development hours (PDHs) will be provided upon request. \nPresenters:  Jeff Shaw\, FWHA Office of Safety Technologies\, Guide Technical Manager; Jonathan Reid\, Arcadis\, Lead Author; Joseph E. Hummer\, NCDOT State Traffic Management Engineer; and representatives from State DOTs having implemented the QRI. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Florida LTAP Webinar: Traffic Engineering Fundamentals Part 1
DESCRIPTION:The Traffic Engineering Fundamentals training is divided into a 3-part webinar series. This session\, on April 14th\, is Part 1 of the 3-part series. Part 1 will cover traffic data and studies. \nIn the Traffic Engineering Fundamentals 3-Part Webinar Series\, the following topics will be covered: \n\nTraffic data and traffic studies – What kind of data do you need to collect and what do you do with it once you have it?\nTraffic design considerations for various types of roadways – Why do our roadways and intersections look the way they do and what are some of the options that are out there?\nTraffic operational considerations – Once you have designed it and built it\, how do you make it all work well?\n\nThis training is a high-level overview of the real basic concepts of traffic engineering and is thus ideal for people that are just starting to work in the field\, or for people that maybe work in related fields that want to learn the lingo of traffic engineering. One of the things that we aim to accomplish in the workshop is to introduce the various topics and point attendees towards resources where they can learn more if they are interested in additional information.
